The day The Chelsea Pensioner set sail along the Thames

On Friday 19th of July 2000 years and two

A twenty-five year long salute re-echoed from the men

Who've spent their time collecting for the boats to take the crew

And Oh The Men in Red have paid their due

They've spent their time collecting for the boats to take the crew

The stately Chelsea Pensioner patrolling on the Thames

In service out of Chiswick in 2000 years and two

As twenty-five year long salute re-echoes from the men

Can take survivors twenty and three people as its crew

And Oh The Men in Red have paid their due

They've spent their time collecting for the boats to take the crew

And Oh The Men in Red have paid their due

If you see a Chelsea Pensioner patrolling on the Thames

Remember they're still working in 2000 years and two

A twenty-five-year-long salute re-echoes from the men

Retired - but still collecting for the boats to take the crew

Robert Patton - The Always Ready

Robert Patton - The Always Ready

Always Ready - he was always ready

In nineteen-thirty-four he gave his life

Always Ready - he was always ready

Aged forty-six he gave away his life

Dispenser was a salvage steamer - sinking in the blast

A tug had taken seven men off safely

The Always Ready came alongside - to take off the last

And Robert Patton said "We'll catch you safely"

ch

The last man on Dispenser was disabled and in fear

No jacket left to save his life in water

As Coxswain Patton clutched his legs - he still clung on in fear

The lifeboat was tossed backward in the water

ch

Down down the two men plummeted - in steaming boiling wave

The lifeboat Always Ready hurling inward

As Patton lifted up the man he'd held on tight to save

His crewmen hauled him up and took him onboard

ch

But still the lifeboat bucketed toward Dispenser's side

With Patton caught between the two - and crushing

He said "I couldn't let him go   For surely he'd have died"

He saved the man - but Patton now was dying

ch

In Runswick - to his funeral - four thousand people came

His Gold Medal was awarded after death

And Robert Patton's name lived on - Still saving lives the same

As Coxwain Robert Patton's final breath

Robert Patton - he was Always Ready

In nineteen-thirty-four he gave his life

Robert Patton of The Always Ready

Aged forty-six he gave away his life

and the lifeboat was re-named Robert Patton - "The Always Ready"

I'm part of the Inflatable Lifeboat Crew

They blow me up and off I go

Riding in a boat as Lifeboat Crew

And able to float away

They say "Tie your lifeline all you Lifeboat Crew

On to the boat and don't let go”

“When awful waves are swamping the Lifeboat Crew

Tipping  the boat - Don't let go”

“If the boat is sinking we rely on you

All well blown up and ready to go”

George Jappy and The Mistletoe

George Jappy out of Buckie - back in 1968

The coxswain of the moment on the Spey

The 21st of February 1968

He went to find the Mistletoe at sea

The trawler Mistletoe was grounded in the River Spey

The George and Sarah Strachan went to help

In coated ice and heavy swell - just in the River Spey

They tried to get a line aboard - to tow

ch

Fishing boats were standing by - the waves were breaking hard

Across the deck of Mistletoe-in-ice

George was risking all - to bring the lifeboat in so hard

And one by one the six crew jumped aboard

ch

Back to Buckie safely - with the men whose lives were saved

George had gained a Bronze - and all his crew

Had Medal Service Thanks for their endeavours - when they saved
