Scott of The Mumbles

Scott of The Mumbles

Scott was a man of dedication
Who knew that lifeboats sank and drowned the crew
He turned up to help at Mumbles Station
And - over years - his dedication grew

When the maroon went off
Scott was there
Ready to go
Ready to go

Scott was the Coxswain of the lifeboat
Aged 26 and certain what to do
A man made for saving from a lifeboat
A man made to lead the finest crew

When the maroon went off
Scott was there
Ready to go
Ready to go

Scott was a brave man in the channel
Saving ten from Kilo - and a child
To earn his first - and second - Silver Medal
Bronze for Steepholm when the seas were wild

When the maroon went off
Scott was there
Ready to go
Ready to go

Scott served thirty-three years as the Coxswain
For all the hours and days in every year
Through his centre - this man was a seaman
Brave - and still determined through his fear

When the maroon went off
Scott was there
Ready to go
Ready to go

He was a man alright

Men had drowned from The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright
Men had drowned from The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright
He never gave up
And he never stayed in
When there was trouble at sea

He gave his life to The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright
He gave his life to The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright

He was a man alright
He never gave up
And he never stayed in
When there was trouble at sea
He still raised cash for The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright

He was a man alright
Coxswain Scott of The Mumbles Lifeboat
He was a man alright

The night was exploding in sodium drums
The Kilo - from Holland - in danger
On fire - in high seas - nearing Swansea she was
And looking for help from a stranger

And Coxswain Scott - he was no stranger at all
His boat and his crewmen were ready
3.20 am William Gammon came out
To search for the ship - keep her steady

18th of November 1963
Eleven force wind whipping higher
A parachute flare - from the air - showed the ship
Explosions and chemical fire

And Coxswain Scott - he was no stranger at all
His boat and his crewmen were ready
3.20 am William Gammon came out
To search for the ship - keep her steady

The Kilo was beached in The Mumbles Bay then
The lifeboat came in for ten crewmen
As flames caught the cargo inside her deep hold
With risk - they knew just what to do then

And Coxswain Scott - he was no stranger at all
His boat and his crewmen were ready
3.20 am William Gammon came out
To search for the ship - keep her steady

Later - the tide floated Kilo again
The fire - it had burned out the ship's stock
Scott brought back the Captain and Chief Engineer
Escorted her to Swansea Dock

And Coxswain Scott - he was no stranger at all
His boat and his crewmen were ready
3.20 am William Gammon came out
To search for the ship - keep her steady
